Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story. Hi, I'm the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. Dane Mizutani: Sam Darnold’s stardom was never meant for the Vikings
8+ hour, 41+ min ago (593+ words) The fleeting moment of euphoria at U.S. Bank Stadium feels like a lifetime ago. After the Minnesota Vikings hung on to beat the Green Bay Packers late last season, Sam Darnold was given a hero's welcome as he entered the locker room. His teammates gathered in a circle, showered him with water and hoisted him upon their shoulders. As the celebration began around him, Darnold tossed his hat in the air and let out a roar. It felt like a cathartic release for a journeyman quarterback who had almost universally been written off as a bust prior to a breakout campaign that came out of nowhere. A couple of weeks later, Darnold was packing up his belongings at TCO Performance Center, left to process how a magical run with the Vikings came to an abrupt end following consecutive losses to the…...
Ask the Master Naturalist: Northern lights should remain more active for next couple of years
10+ hour, 56+ min ago (392+ words) Question: I've seen more pictures of the northern lights on social media lately. Is something going on or are people just taking more pictures of them? Answer: The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are on the upswing, both in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere, where they are known as the aurora australis. Question: How do I know when there is a geomagnetic storm on the sun, meaning there may be northern lights here soon? Answer: The best way is to use an app on your phone, which will send you notifications if you want. A simple free app that I use is "My Aurora." The app gives you notification of the KP index and the percentage likelihood that you'll see aurora in your specific location. The app also gives you a percentage chance of seeing the northern lights....

Sabres stun Wild with shootout win, snap seven-game win streak
19+ hour, 5+ min ago (450+ words) After 28 days of mostly good news, the Minnesota Wild could not reach the end of their November schedule on a fully happy note. Facing the Eastern Conference's worst team, Minnesota saw the Buffalo Sabres rally for a 3-2 shootout win on Saturday at Grand Casino Arena. Noah Ostlund scored the decisive goal for the Sabres in the fourth round of the shootout. The Wild got first period goals from Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy, holding the lead in all three periods, but saw their seven-game winning streak snapped. Against downtrodden Buffalo, they couldn't build on the momentum from beating Colorado in a shootout a night earlier Minnesota goalie Filip Gustavsson, under duress for much of the final 30 minutes, had 30 saves in the loss. The Wild finished November with a 11-1-2 record. It was the Wild's fifth time in overtime or a shootout…...
Jesper Wallstedt’s hot start brings fans, a detractor, and a t-shirt
19+ hour, 56+ min ago (762+ words) While it was likely the fulfillment of a small dream he'd had at some point, to see his nickname and image emblazoned on a T-shirt, Wild rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt was a little confused about the protocol. When he got to the team's locker room before Friday's showdown with previously red-hot Colorado, every stall in the room had a T-shirt in it featuring the words, "The Wall of St. Paul" and an illustration of Wallstedt doing his signature postgame celebration, which is part fist pump and part thrust with his stick like you might see from a fencer. Following the Wild's 3-2 shootout win, which lifted his record to 7-0-2, Wallstedt said he knew the T-shirts existed but was a little surprised to see many of his teammates wearing them before facing the Avalanche. "I saw it on Instagram or something, I…...
Gophers tighten grip on Paul Bunyan’s Axe with 17-7 win over Wisconsin
21+ hour, 44+ min ago (667+ words) The Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe between the Gophers and Badgers was swayed by a former Hawkeye. Junior cornerback John Nestor, who transferred from Iowa to Minnesota last spring, had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to help the U win the rivalry game, 17-7, on a snowy and cold Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium. The Gophers (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) have won four of five Axe games against Wisconsin for the first time since winning six of seven from 1984-90. After the win was sealed, Gophers players raced to the Axe in the west end zone as fans threw handfuls of snow in the air in celebration. Students stormed the field, and the stadium turned up the Badgers' anthem, "Jump Around" by House of Pain, as players mimicked chopping down the goalposts. While Nestor led a stingy defense with a team-high-tying nine tackles,…...
